Hüdrolaasideks, also known as hydrolases, are a broad class of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of chemical bonds. This means they use water to break down molecules into smaller components. They are involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, cellular waste removal, and signal transduction.

The general reaction catalyzed by a hydrolase involves the addition of a water molecule across a substrate bond, cleaving it and forming two new molecules, one of which will contain a hydrogen atom and the other a hydroxyl group from the water. This mechanism allows for the efficient breakdown of complex biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.

Examples of hydrolases include proteases, which break down proteins into amino acids; lipases, which break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol; and nucleases, which break down nucleic acids like DNA and RNA. Many important enzymes involved in cellular respiration, detoxification, and immune responses are also hydrolases.
