A hübriidmootor, or hybrid engine, is a power system that combines at least two distinct energy sources to propel a vehicle. Typically, this involves an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. The primary advantage of a hybrid engine is improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle.

There are several types of hybrid powertrains. A parallel hybrid system allows both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to drive the wheels simultaneously or independently. A series hybrid system uses the internal combustion engine solely as a generator to charge a battery or power the electric motor, which then drives the wheels. A series-parallel hybrid, also known as a power-split hybrid, can operate in both series and parallel modes, offering greater flexibility and efficiency.

The electric motor in a hybrid vehicle is powered by a battery pack. This battery can be recharged through regenerative braking, where the kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into electrical energy when slowing down, or by the internal combustion engine. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have larger battery packs and can be charged by plugging into an external power source, allowing for a significant electric-only driving range.

Hybrid technology has become increasingly popular across various vehicle types, from passenger cars to larger trucks, as manufacturers seek to meet stricter environmental regulations and consumer demand for more sustainable transportation options. The complexity of the system, however, can sometimes lead to higher initial purchase costs and maintenance.
