Húðheldni is an Icelandic term that translates to "skin grip" or "skin adherence." It refers to the phenomenon where skin becomes abnormally stuck to underlying tissues, often due to inflammation, injury, or certain medical conditions. This can result in a feeling of tightness, restricted movement, and sometimes pain in the affected area.

The causes of húðheldni are varied. Severe burns can lead to extensive scarring, where fibrous tissue forms and binds the skin to deeper structures like muscle or bone. Similarly, chronic skin infections or inflammatory conditions such as scleroderma can cause thickening and hardening of the skin, leading to adherence. Surgical procedures can also result in húðheldni if scar tissue forms in an unfavorable way, restricting normal skin mobility.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, where a healthcare professional assesses the degree of skin restriction and any associated symptoms. Imaging techniques may sometimes be used to evaluate the underlying tissues. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and severity. For mild cases, physical therapy and massage may be beneficial to improve skin elasticity and mobility. In more severe instances, surgical interventions like scar revision or skin grafting might be necessary to release the adherence and restore function.
