Hørselskader refer to damage to the auditory system that results in a loss of hearing. This damage can occur in the outer ear, middle ear, or inner ear, and can be caused by a variety of factors. Common causes include prolonged exposure to loud noise, aging (presbycusis), infections, certain medications, and genetic predispositions.

Noise-induced hearing loss is a significant preventable cause. It happens when the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, which convert sound vibrations into electrical signals sent to the brain, are damaged by excessive sound pressure. This damage can be sudden, as from an explosion, or gradual, from consistent exposure to loud environments like concerts or industrial settings.

Hearing loss can manifest in different ways. Some individuals experience a gradual dimming of sounds, while others may notice difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy situations. Tinnitus, a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears, can also be a symptom of underlying hearing damage.

Diagnosis of hearing loss typically involves audiological testing, such as pure-tone audiometry, which measures hearing thresholds across different frequencies. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the hearing loss. For some types, medical or surgical interventions might be possible. For many cases, particularly sensorineural hearing loss, hearing aids or cochlear implants can help restore a degree of hearing function and improve communication. Prevention through noise reduction and protection is crucial.
