Höyrystyskondensaattorit, or evaporative condensers, are heat exchangers that cool a working fluid by the evaporation of a water-based fluid. They are commonly used in industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The process involves spraying water over a coil containing the hot refrigerant. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the refrigerant, causing it to condense. This condensed refrigerant is then recirculated.

Evaporative condensers are more energy-efficient than traditional condensers that rely solely on air or water cooling. This is because the evaporation process can achieve lower temperatures than ambient air, leading to better refrigerant subcooling and reduced compressor work. They are particularly effective in hot climates where air-cooled condensers struggle to maintain efficiency.

The design typically includes a fan to draw air through the unit, a water pump and spray nozzles to distribute water over the coils, and the coils themselves, usually made of steel or copper. Water is usually recirculated in a closed loop, with a small amount lost to evaporation that needs to be replenished. A basin collects the water that flows down, and a float valve maintains the water level.

While efficient, evaporative condensers require a consistent water supply and can be susceptible to scaling and corrosion if water quality is not managed. Regular maintenance, including water treatment and cleaning of the coils, is necessary to ensure optimal performance and longevity. They are often installed outdoors due to the need for airflow and water discharge.
