högskoleexamen

Högskoleexamen is a Swedish undergraduate degree awarded by higher education institutions in Sweden. Historically the primary bachelor’s‑level degree, it was granted by both universities and högskolor (universities of applied sciences). The degree is positioned at the same educational level as what many countries identify as a bachelor’s degree. The term is less common today but remains in use for some older programs or specific professional tracks.

Structure and requirements: A typical högskoleexamen requires about 180 Swedish higher education credits (hp), corresponding to three years of full-time study. Programs usually include coursework across the chosen field, as well as a final project or thesis. Fields span arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines. Some programs include professional titles or mandates for registration in regulated occupations.

Relation to other degrees and reforms: With the Bologna Process, Sweden adopted standardized bachelor’s and master’s degrees; the standard bachelor’s degree is called kandidatexamen. Since the 2000s, many programs formerly awarding högskoleexamen have transitioned to kandidatexamen, and today the term högskoleexamen is largely historical or used only in a few older courses. Where both terms exist, they denote a comparable undergraduate level; national rules determine the official designation on the diploma and transcript.

Recognition and equivalence: In international comparisons, a högskoleexamen is treated as a bachelor’s‑level qualification. For students and graduates, the Diploma Supplement or the official transcript issued by the awarding institution provides details on credits, curricula, and the degree title.
