Hyytymistekijä, often referred to as a clotting factor, is a protein in the blood that is essential for hemostasis, the process by which bleeding is stopped. There are numerous clotting factors, each playing a specific role in a complex cascade of enzymatic reactions. This cascade, when activated, leads to the formation of a fibrin clot, which seals damaged blood vessels and prevents further blood loss.

Both pathways ultimately lead to the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin, the structural basis of a blood clot. The precise regulation of these factors is critical; too little clotting can result in uncontrolled bleeding, while too much can lead to dangerous blood clots forming within blood vessels, a condition known as thrombosis.
