Hyytymissä is a Finnish term that broadly refers to the process of coagulation or clotting, primarily in biological contexts. It describes the transformation of liquid blood into a semi-solid gel, a crucial mechanism for hemostasis, which stops bleeding after injury. This process involves a complex cascade of protein interactions, primarily platelets and clotting factors, leading to the formation of a fibrin clot.

The initial stage of hyytymissä involves platelet activation. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets adhere to the site of injury and aggregate, forming a temporary plug. Simultaneously, the coagulation cascade is initiated. This cascade is a series of enzymatic reactions where inactive clotting factors are sequentially activated, amplifying the signal. Thrombin, a key enzyme in this cascade, converts fibrinogen, a soluble protein in the plasma, into insoluble fibrin.

Fibrin strands then form a meshwork that reinforces the platelet plug, trapping blood cells and further solidifying the clot. This stable fibrin clot effectively seals the damaged blood vessel, preventing further blood loss. Once healing is complete, a process called fibrinolysis begins, where the clot is gradually broken down by enzymes like plasmin, restoring normal blood flow.
