Hysteresis is a phenomenon where the state of a system depends on its history. It is observed in various scientific and engineering fields. When a system exhibits hysteresis, its output is not solely determined by its current input, but also by the path it took to reach that input. This means that if you apply a changing input and then reverse its direction, the system's response will follow a different path on the return journey compared to the initial one.

A common example of hysteresis is found in magnetic materials. When a magnetic field is applied to a ferromagnetic material, it becomes magnetized. If the magnetic field is then reduced and reversed, the material retains some magnetism, known as remanence. This remnant magnetism means that the magnetization of the material does not perfectly track the applied magnetic field, creating a hysteresis loop when plotted.

Hysteresis also appears in mechanical systems, such as in the behavior of rubber or in the friction between surfaces. In economics, it can describe how market prices or consumer behavior may not immediately revert to previous states after a shock or change in conditions. The concept is crucial for understanding and modeling systems that do not behave in a purely reversible manner.
