Hypotsis, usually written hypothesis, is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon that can be tested through observation and experiment. It provides a focused question and a testable prediction, guiding the design of studies and data collection. The term comes from the Greek hypo, under, and thesis, placing; the scientific sense involves forming statements that can be supported or refuted by evidence.

In scientific practice there are several kinds of hypotheses. Descriptive hypotheses predict patterns or relationships without asserting causality. Causal hypotheses propose a cause-and-effect link. In statistics, researchers often formulate a null hypothesis (H0), which claims no effect or difference, and an alternative hypothesis (Ha), which claims an effect or difference. The goal of testing is typically to assess whether the data provide sufficient evidence to reject H0 in favor of Ha.

A good hypothesis is testable, falsifiable, and specific. It should be grounded in prior observations and existing theory, and it should specify the population, variables, and the expected direction of effects if applicable. Framing a hypothesis clearly helps determine the methods, measurements, and analysis used in a study.

Testing a hypothesis involves designing experiments or observational studies, collecting data, and analyzing results to see if the predictions hold. Outcomes may support, refute, or lead to revision of the hypothesis. A hypothesis is not proven beyond doubt; it is supported or contradicted by the weight of evidence. Hypotheses are central to the scientific method, serving as the starting point for inquiry and the basis for drawing conclusions.
