It is not an official diagnostic term, and its meaning can be unclear without context. When precision is required, clinicians and researchers usually rely on the established term hypomania or on related diagnoses.

Hypomania is a distinct mood state characterized by persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and increased energy or activity. Other common features include decreased need for sleep, pressured speech, racing thoughts, rapid or loud speech, distractibility, increased goal-directed activity, and risky or impulsive behavior. To qualify as hypomanic, symptoms must last at least four consecutive days and represent a noticeable change from the person's baseline. They are not severe enough to cause marked impairment or require hospitalization, and they are not attributable to substances or another medical condition. Hypomanic episodes are a key component of bipolar II disorder and may appear in other mood disorders.

Etymology and usage: The form “hypomanian” comprises the prefix hypo- meaning under or less than, combined with mania, plus the adjectival or nominal suffix -an. Because it is not standard in clinical practice, the term may cause ambiguity. In formal writing and clinical contexts, it is preferable to use “hypomania” (the mood state) or “hypomanic episode” to avoid confusion, reserving “hypomanian” for nonclinical or niche discussions.
