Hypohalospecies is a neologism used to describe species adapted to hyposaline environments, or habitats with salinity lower than that of typical seawater. The term combines hypo- from Greek meaning under or less than, with halos meaning salt. It is not a standard taxonomic category in contemporary biology and appears mainly in speculative biology, theoretical discussions, or science fiction.

In ecological terms, hypohalospecies would occupy brackish or freshwater-influenced estuarine systems where salinity fluctuates. They would need robust osmoregulatory strategies to cope with changing ion concentrations, possibly including production of compatible solutes, specialized membrane transporters, and flexible cell volume control. The concept emphasizes evolutionary transitions from freshwater or low-salinity lineages toward habitats with somewhat elevated salinity yet below marine levels.

Taxonomic status is unsettled. Hypohalospecies is best viewed as an ecological or evolutionary descriptor rather than a formal clade or rank.
