Hypergraphen, also known as abstract hypergraphen, are a generalization of the concept of a graph. In a traditional graph, an edge connects exactly two vertices. In a hypergraph, a hyperedge can connect any number of vertices, including zero or one. This makes hypergraphen a more flexible structure for representing relationships where connections can involve multiple entities simultaneously.

The formal definition of a hypergraph H is a pair (X, E), where X is a set of vertices and E is a collection of subsets of X. Each subset in E is called a hyperedge. For example, if X = {a, b, c, d} and E = {{a, b}, {b, c, d}, {a}}, then H is a hypergraph with four vertices and three hyperedges. The hyperedge {a, b} connects vertices a and b, while {b, c, d} connects b, c, and d. The hyperedge {a} is a singleton hyperedge connecting only vertex a. An empty hyperedge, denoted by {}, is also possible.

Hypergraphen find applications in various fields. In computer science, they are used to model database relationships, information retrieval systems, and computational complexity. In biology, hypergraphen can represent complex interactions between genes or proteins. They are also used in social network analysis to model group memberships and interactions beyond pairwise connections. Different types of hypergraphen exist, such as uniform hypergraphen where all hyperedges have the same size, and linear hypergraphen with specific structural properties.
