The term "hyperedge" emphasizes its generalized nature compared to a standard edge. A hypergraph can be formally defined as a pair (V, E), where V is a set of vertices and E is a set of hyperedges. Each hyperedge is a subset of V. For instance, if we have vertices {A, B, C, D}, a hyperedge could be {A, B, C}, representing a relationship involving all three vertices. Another hyperedge might be {B, D}, representing a relationship between just two.

Hypergraphs and hyperedges find applications in various fields. In computer science, they are used to model database relationships, computational structures, and network topologies. In biology, they can represent interactions between genes, proteins, or molecules. In social sciences, they can model group memberships or complex social connections. The flexibility of hyperedges allows for the representation of n-ary relationships, which are common in real-world scenarios but difficult to capture with standard graph structures.
