Non-fossil fuel-based production aims for cleaner hydrogen. Electrolysis of water is a prominent technique, where electricity is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. If the electricity used comes from renewable sources like solar or wind power, the resulting hydrogen is considered "green hydrogen" and is emission-free. Another method is biomass gasification, which converts organic matter into hydrogen and other gases. Research is also ongoing into thermochemical water splitting, using high temperatures to decompose water without electricity, and photocatalytic water splitting, using sunlight and catalysts. The choice of production technique significantly impacts the environmental footprint and cost of the hydrogen produced.
