The basic components of a hydraulic ram include a cylinder, a piston, a check valve, and a delivery pipe. Water enters the cylinder through an inlet pipe and is forced against the piston by the pressure of the falling water. The piston then moves upward, closing the inlet valve and opening the check valve, allowing water to flow into the delivery pipe and be lifted to a higher level. As the water in the cylinder is displaced, it flows back into the inlet pipe, and the cycle repeats.

Hydraulic rams are commonly used in remote areas where electricity is not available, as they can be powered by the natural flow of water. They are also used in situations where a reliable and low-maintenance water supply is required, such as in rural communities and developing countries. However, hydraulic rams have a lower efficiency compared to other types of pumps, and their performance can be affected by factors such as water pressure, flow rate, and the height of the lift.
