The most prominent hydnocarpic acids are hydnocarpic acid itself, which contains a cyclopropane ring in its ninth position, and its homologues like chaulmoogric acid and gorlic acid, which have different chain lengths and positions of the cyclopropane ring.

Historically, hydnocarpic acids, particularly those extracted from Hydnocarpus species like Hydnocarpus wightiana, were used in traditional medicine to treat leprosy. The oils derived from these seeds, rich in hydnocarpic acids, were administered orally or applied topically.
