Husbandsemirs were a group of semi-autonomous rulers who held significant power in the Byzantine Empire during the 11th and 12th centuries. The term "husbandsemir" is derived from the Greek words "husband" and "emir," reflecting their role as the husbands of the empresses who were regents during the minority of their sons. This practice was particularly prevalent during the Komnenian dynasty, which ruled the Byzantine Empire from 1081 to 1185.

The husbandsemirs were not merely political figures; they often held military and administrative responsibilities. They were typically appointed by the emperor and were expected to support the imperial family and the state. Their power varied depending on the specific circumstances and the strength of the empress. In some cases, they held significant influence, while in others, their role was more ceremonial.

One of the most notable husbandsemirs was Nikephoros Bryennios, who served as the husband of Empress Anna Komnene and played a crucial role in the defense of the empire against the Seljuk Turks. Another prominent figure was Alexios Komnenos, the father of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who also held the title of husbandsemir.

The practice of husbandsemirs eventually declined as the Byzantine Empire faced increasing external threats and internal strife. By the 13th century, the role had largely disappeared, and the imperial family took on more direct control of the empire's affairs.
