Hunaaja is a Finnish term that translates to "honeycomb" in English. It refers to the hexagonal waxy structure produced by bees to store honey, pollen, and their young. Honeycombs are a fundamental part of a beehive and are essential for the survival and reproduction of the bee colony.

The construction of honeycombs is an intricate process. Bees secrete wax from glands on their abdomen. They then chew and mold this wax into precise hexagonal cells. The hexagonal shape is favored because it is the most efficient way to pack cells together, minimizing wasted space and wax. Each cell is typically about 5.4 millimeters wide.

Honeycombs serve multiple purposes. They are used to store honey, which is the primary food source for bees, especially during winter. Pollen is also stored in cells, providing essential protein and nutrients. Furthermore, the queen bee lays her eggs in these cells, and the developing larvae are raised there. After the young bees emerge, the cells are cleaned and reused.

The appearance of honeycomb can vary depending on the type of bee and the contents of the cells. Freshly built comb is usually a pale, waxy white. As it is used and filled, it can darken due to the presence of propolis (bee glue) and pollen. The structure is delicate yet strong, capable of holding a significant amount of honey. In beekeeping, honeycombs are harvested for their honey and sometimes for beeswax.
