hortis

Hortis is a Latin term that functions as the dative and ablative plural form of the noun hortus, which means "garden." Hortus is a second-declension masculine noun, and its principal forms include nominative hortus, genitive horti, and the plural horti (nominative), hortorum (genitive), and hortis (dative and ablative). As a result, hortis appears in Latin texts to convey meanings such as “to the gardens” (dative plural) or “in the gardens” (ablative plural), depending on the grammatical context. A common example is in hortis, meaning “in the gardens.”

In classical prose and poetry, hortis is encountered when describing locations, movements, or contexts related to garden spaces associated with a villa, estate, or city. Because Latin relies on case endings to indicate function, hortis can mark indirect objects or oblique spatial relations without a preposition, or appear with prepositions that govern the ablative.

Outside of Latin grammar, hortis is rarely used as a standalone term in modern languages.
