Hopeakalvot, also known as silver halides, are a group of chemical compounds with the general formula AgX, where X represents a halogen such as chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), or iodine (I). These compounds are primarily known for their light-sensitive properties, which form the basis of traditional black-and-white photography.

In photography, silver halides are dispersed in a gelatin emulsion and coated onto a film or paper base. When exposed to light, the silver halide crystals undergo a photochemical reaction. Light energy causes the halide ion to lose an electron, which is then accepted by a silver ion, forming a neutral silver atom. These silver atoms aggregate to form a latent image, which is invisible to the naked eye.

Development is a subsequent process where a chemical developer reduces the exposed silver halide crystals to metallic silver, making the latent image visible. Unexposed silver halide crystals are then removed by a fixer, typically a thiosulfate solution, leaving behind a permanent silver image. The sensitivity of a particular silver halide to different wavelengths of light can be modified by adding sensitizing dyes.

Beyond photography, hopeakalvot have found applications in other areas, including X-ray imaging, where their ability to darken upon exposure to radiation is utilized. They are also used in certain chemical syntheses and as components in some light-sensitive coatings. Their historical significance in the development of visual media is undeniable.
