holostylic
Holostylic refers to a type of jaw suspension found in some vertebrates. In this arrangement, the quadrate bone, which articulates with the lower jaw, is fused to the skull. This fusion means that the quadrate bone does not move independently relative to the braincase. Consequently, the entire jaw apparatus, including the mandible, moves as a single unit. This contrasts with autostylic or hyostylic jaw suspensions where there is more mobility between the quadrate and the skull, or where the hyomandibula plays a significant role in suspending the jaw.
The holostylic jaw suspension is considered a more primitive condition and is observed in certain extant cartilaginous
