hlustið
hlustið is a form of the Icelandic verb hlusta and is used as the second-person plural imperative, meaning “listen” directed at multiple listeners. It is commonly used in instructions, announcements, and direct speech when addressing a group. The corresponding singular imperative is hlust when addressing one person, while hlustið targets more than one addressee. The form hlustið is constructed from the verb stem hlust- with the imperative plural ending -ið. In typical usage, it can appear alone as a command or as part of a longer clause, for example hlustið á mig (“listen to me”), hlustið núna (“listen now”).
Usage and tone: Imperatives in Icelandic convey force through context and intonation. hlustið can carry urgency,
- Hlustið á mig, vinir mínir. (Listen to me, friends.)
- Hlustið núna og gerið það sem ég segi. (Listen now and do what I say.)
