Hjärtväggar, or heart walls, refer to the muscular layers that form the structure of the heart. The heart is a vital organ responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, and its walls are composed of specialized cardiac muscle tissue. These walls are crucial for generating the contractions that propel blood with each heartbeat.

The heart wall is typically described as having three distinct layers. The outermost layer is the epicardium, which also serves as the visceral layer of the serous pericardium. Beneath the epicardium lies the myocardium, the thickest and most muscular layer. This layer is primarily composed of cardiac muscle cells, or cardiomyocytes, which are responsible for the heart's powerful contractions. The innermost layer is the endocardium, a thin, smooth membrane that lines the heart chambers and covers the heart valves. This smooth lining helps to ensure that blood flows easily through the heart without significant friction.

The coordinated action of these muscle layers, driven by electrical impulses, allows the heart to efficiently pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs. The thickness and strength of the myocardial layer vary between the different chambers of the heart, reflecting the different pressures they must generate. For instance, the left ventricle, which pumps blood to the entire body, has a significantly thicker wall than the right ventricle, which pumps blood only to the lungs. The health and integrity of these heart walls are essential for proper cardiovascular function.
