For identical, indistinguishable particles, two primary types of distributions are recognized. Fermions, such as electrons and protons, obey Fermi-Dirac statistics. This property leads to phenomena like Bose-Einstein condensation, where a significant fraction of bosons occupies the lowest energy state at very low temperatures.

In classical physics, when particles are distinguishable or when quantum effects are negligible, Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics are applied. This distribution describes particles in thermal equilibrium and is often used for macroscopic systems where the number of available states is very large compared to the number of particles. Understanding these different distributions is crucial for predicting the macroscopic properties of matter from its microscopic constituents.
