The Hittites were an Anatolian ancient civilization. They established a kingdom centered in Hattusa, in north-central Anatolia, around the 17th century BCE. This kingdom later expanded to include significant portions of Anatolia and northwestern Syria. The Hittite language was an Indo-European language, making it the earliest attested Indo-European language.

Hittite society was structured with a king at its head, supported by a noble class. They were known for their military prowess, particularly their use of chariots. Their legal system was codified, with laws that were often less severe than those of contemporary Near Eastern states. Religion played a significant role in Hittite life, with a pantheon of gods and goddesses, many of whom were adopted from or shared with neighboring cultures.

The Hittite Empire reached its peak in the mid-14th century BCE, engaging in major conflicts with powers such as Egypt. The Battle of Kadesh against the Egyptians is one of the best-documented battles of antiquity. The Hittite Empire eventually declined and collapsed around 1200 BCE, likely due to a combination of internal strife, invasions by the Sea Peoples, and possibly climate change. Despite their collapse, their cultural and linguistic legacy influenced subsequent civilizations in the region. Archaeological discoveries, beginning in the early 20th century, have revealed much about their history, culture, and administration through extensive cuneiform archives found at Hattusa.
