hisaab

Hisaab is a term used in Urdu and Hindi that denotes calculation, accounting, or an account. In everyday usage it can refer to the act of computing and recording financial transactions, as well as an outstanding balance or an individual’s accounts.

The word derives from Arabic hisab (حِسَاب), meaning calculation or reckoning, and has been adopted into Urdu and Hindi through Persian and other historical contacts between the languages and traders.

In business and commerce, hisaab commonly refers to bookkeeping and accounting. Phrases such as hisaab kitaab denote the records of debts and credits, and to keep hisaab means to maintain accounts or to balance the books. With modern technology, hisaab also encompasses digital accounting software and online ledgers.

In literature and everyday speech, the term is widely understood and appears in proverbs and dialogue to emphasize financial matters, settlement of dues, or the calculation of costs.
