It often has a familial component, suggesting a genetic predisposition. Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying medical issue, such as an overactive thyroid, diabetes, certain infections, or as a side effect of some medications.

The impact of hyperhidrosis can range from mild inconvenience to significant emotional distress and social impairment. Excessive sweating can lead to difficulties in daily tasks, affect self-esteem, and cause anxiety in social situations.

Diagnosis of hyperhidrosis is usually based on a medical history and physical examination. Doctors may use questionnaires to assess the severity of sweating and its impact on a person's life. In cases of suspected secondary hyperhidrosis, further tests may be conducted to identify the underlying cause.

Treatment options for hyperhidrosis vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. For primary hyperhidrosis, topical treatments like antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride are often the first line of defense. Other options include oral medications, iontophoresis (a technique using mild electrical currents), botulinum toxin injections, and in severe cases, surgical interventions such as sympathectomy. Secondary hyperhidrosis is treated by addressing the underlying medical condition.
