Higher efficiency is a property of a system or process where more useful output is produced per unit of input than in a previous version or a defined baseline. It is commonly expressed as a ratio or percentage, such as useful energy or work divided by total energy input. Higher efficiency reduces resource use for the same service, or increases service output for the same input. In engineering, improving efficiency is a central aim across power generation, electromechanical systems, heating and cooling, lighting, and industrial processes.

Efficiency metrics and limits vary by domain. For thermal systems, thermodynamic efficiency is bounded by fundamental limits such as Carnot efficiency. Real devices exhibit irreversibilities that lower actual efficiency. Common practical metrics include energy efficiency ratio (EER) for cooling equipment, and coefficient of performance (COP) for heating and cooling devices. Life-cycle efficiency considers manufacturing, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life impacts.

While higher efficiency often lowers operating costs and environmental impact, it may entail higher upfront cost, greater complexity, or reduced reliability if not designed carefully. Behavioral responses, such as using saved energy for additional consumption, can offset gains (rebound effect). Evaluations frequently use life-cycle cost analysis and environmental life-cycle assessment.

Improvements arise from better materials, advanced designs, energy recovery, process optimization, power management, and smarter control strategies. Standards, labeling, and incentives encourage adoption of more efficient technologies and practices.
