A higanygőzlámpa, or mercury-vapor lamp, is a type of electric arc lamp that uses an electric arc through vaporized mercury to produce light. When the lamp is first turned on, it emits a purplish glow. As the mercury vapor heats up and its pressure increases, the lamp transitions to a bright white light. These lamps are known for their high luminous efficacy, meaning they produce a lot of light for the amount of energy consumed. However, their color rendering is not as good as incandescent or fluorescent lamps, and they can take several minutes to reach full brightness.

Higanygőzlámpák were commonly used for street lighting, industrial areas, and sports stadiums due to their efficiency and long lifespan. They are typically characterized by a bluish-white light output. The lamp contains a small amount of mercury and an inert gas, such as argon, in a quartz glass arc tube. When electricity passes through the arc tube, it excites the mercury vapor, causing it to emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This UV radiation then strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the outer glass bulb, which fluoresces and emits visible light. Modern lighting solutions have largely replaced higanygőzlámpák in many applications due to environmental concerns related to mercury and the availability of more energy-efficient and better color-rendering alternatives.
