Hidrogénkötési refers to the process of forming hydrogen bonds. A hydrogen bond is a weak attraction between a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom (such as oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine) and another electronegative atom nearby. This electronegative atom typically has a lone pair of electrons. In essence, the hydrogen atom becomes partially positive, and the adjacent electronegative atom becomes partially negative, leading to an electrostatic attraction.

These bonds are crucial in many chemical and biological systems. For example, they are responsible for many of the unique properties of water, such as its relatively high boiling point and its ability to act as a solvent. In biology, hydrogen bonds play a vital role in the structure of DNA, holding the two strands of the double helix together, and in the folding of proteins, which determines their function. The strength of a hydrogen bond is intermediate between that of a covalent bond and a van der Waals interaction. While individually weak, the cumulative effect of many hydrogen bonds can be quite significant, influencing the physical and chemical properties of substances.
