Heterokromatiini is a densely packed form of chromatin in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. Chromatin is the complex of DNA and proteins that makes up chromosomes. Unlike euchromatin, which is loosely packed and transcriptionally active, heterochromatin is transcriptionally repressed. This means that the genes located within heterochromatin are generally not expressed.

These factors contribute to the formation of a stable, transcriptionally silent state. The presence of heterochromatin is crucial for various cellular processes, including maintaining genome integrity, regulating gene expression patterns, and X-chromosome inactivation in female mammals. Aberrations in heterochromatin structure and function are associated with various diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders.
