Heterodyyni is a Finnish term that translates to "heterodyne" in English. A heterodyne is a device or process that mixes two signals of different frequencies to produce a signal at a frequency that is the sum or difference of the original two frequencies. This process is fundamental to many electronic applications, particularly in radio receivers and transmitters.

In radio technology, heterodyning is used to downconvert a received radio frequency (RF) signal to a lower intermediate frequency (IF). This is achieved by mixing the incoming RF signal with a locally generated signal from a local oscillator (LO). The resulting IF signal is then amplified and processed, which is easier to handle than the original high-frequency RF signal. This technique allows for more stable amplification and filtering, leading to improved receiver performance.

The difference frequency produced by the heterodyne process is often referred to as the intermediate frequency (IF).
