Heterochromatized refers to the state of chromatin that is condensed and transcriptionally inactive. Chromatin, the complex of DNA and proteins that forms chromosomes within the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, exists in two main forms: euchromatin and heterochromatin. Euchromatin is less condensed and is where most gene transcription occurs, while heterochromatized regions are tightly packed and generally devoid of gene expression.

There are two primary types of heterochromatin: constitutive and facultative. Constitutive heterochromatin is found in specific regions of chromosomes, such as centromeres and telomeres, and remains condensed throughout the cell cycle. It plays a role in chromosome structure and stability. Facultative heterochromatin, on the other hand, can change its state from condensed to decondensed and back again. This dynamic form is involved in regulating gene expression in response to developmental cues or environmental signals. For instance, X-chromosome inactivation in female mammals is an example of facultative heterochromatization, where one of the two X chromosomes becomes largely heterochromatized to ensure dosage compensation.

The process of heterochromatization involves modifications to both DNA and histone proteins. DNA methylation, particularly at CpG islands, and various histone modifications, such as deacetylation and methylation of specific residues, contribute to the formation and maintenance of heterochromatic structures. These epigenetic changes lead to a more compact DNA structure, making it inaccessible to the transcriptional machinery, thus silencing gene expression.
