Heptranchias is a genus of sharks belonging to the family Hemigaleidae, which includes the cow sharks. The genus Heptranchias was first described by the American ichthyologist Samuel Garman in 1884. The name Heptranchias is derived from the Greek words "hepta," meaning seven, and "ranchis," meaning gill, referring to the seven pairs of gill slits in these sharks.

Heptranchias species are characterized by their large size, robust bodies, and distinctive features such as the presence of a prominent nictitating membrane (a third eyelid) and a large, rounded first dorsal fin. They are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, inhabiting both coastal and deep-sea environments.

The genus includes two recognized species: Heptranchias perlo, commonly known as the bigeye cow shark, and Heptranchias heptranchias, known as the smalltooth cow shark. Both species are of commercial importance due to their meat and liver oil, which is used in traditional medicine. However, their populations are threatened by overfishing and habitat degradation, leading to their listing as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Heptranchias sharks play a crucial role in their ecosystems as apex predators, helping to maintain the balance of marine food webs. Their conservation is essential for the health of marine environments and the sustainability of fisheries.
