The hemodialysis process begins with the patient lying on a treatment table. A needle is inserted into a vein in the patient's arm, and a catheter is threaded into the artery. Another needle is inserted into the opposite arm, and a second catheter is placed in the vein. The arterial catheter is connected to the dialysis machine, which pumps blood through the dialyzer. The dialyzer contains semipermeable membranes that allow water and waste products to pass through while retaining essential substances like blood cells and proteins.

During the procedure, the patient's blood is continuously circulated through the dialyzer, and waste products are removed. The cleaned blood is then returned to the patient's body through the venous catheter. The entire process typically takes about 3 to 5 hours, and patients usually undergo hemodialysis three times a week.

Hemodialysis is a life-saving treatment for patients with ESRD, but it is not a cure for kidney failure. It requires regular sessions and can have side effects such as fatigue, weakness, and itching.
