Hemiolien is a musical term referring to a rhythmic device where two beats are performed in the time normally allotted to three. This creates a sensation of rhythmic tension or displacement. In a measure of 3/4 time, for instance, a hemiola would involve grouping the three quarter notes into two units, effectively sounding like a measure of 2/4. Similarly, in 6/8 time, which is typically felt in two beats of a dotted quarter note, a hemiola would reconfigure this grouping to sound like three beats of a quarter note.
