A hemiacetal is a functional group in organic chemistry that contains a carbon atom bonded to one alkoxy group and one hydroxyl group. It is formed by the reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with an alcohol. The reaction is reversible and typically catalyzed by an acid or base.

When an aldehyde reacts with an alcohol, it forms a hemiacetal. Similarly, when a ketone reacts with an alcohol, it forms a hemiketal. The term hemiacetal is often used generically to refer to both hemiacetals and hemiketals.

Hemiacetals are often intermediates in the formation of acetals and ketals, which are formed by the reaction of a hemiacetal or hemiketal with a second molecule of alcohol. In aqueous solutions, carbohydrates often exist in equilibrium between their open-chain and cyclic hemiacetal forms. For example, glucose exists primarily as its cyclic hemiacetal forms, alpha-glucose and beta-glucose.
