Hematómákról, or hematomas, are collections of blood outside of blood vessels. They typically occur when a blood vessel is damaged, causing blood to leak into surrounding tissues. The appearance of a hematoma can vary depending on its size and location, but they are often characterized by discoloration of the skin, ranging from red or purple to blue or green as the blood breaks down. Swelling and pain are also common symptoms.

Hematomas can be caused by a variety of factors, including direct trauma such as a blow to the body, surgical procedures, or even certain medical conditions that affect blood clotting. Minor hematomas, often referred to as bruises, are common and usually resolve on their own within days or weeks. Larger hematomas, however, may require medical attention.

Diagnosis of a hematoma is typically based on a physical examination and the patient's medical history. In some cases, imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI may be used to assess the size and extent of the hematoma. Treatment depends on the size, location, and cause of the hematoma. Small, uncomplicated hematomas usually require only rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to manage pain and swelling. Larger or more serious hematomas might necessitate aspiration of the blood, surgical drainage, or treatment of the underlying cause. Complications can include infection, nerve damage, or compartment syndrome in severe cases.
