Hemangiomas are benign vascular lesions that consist of an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels. They are the most common type of birthmark and can occur anywhere on the body. Hemangiomas typically appear as a reddish or blue discoloration on the skin and can vary in size and texture.

Hemangiomas are made up of excess blood vessels which can look like a tuft of thread or a rash-like appearance. They usually develop within the first few weeks of life and may or may not regress over time. The surface of a hemangioma can be smooth or it can appear raised, depending on the area affected and the individual.

Types of hemangiomas include the infantile hemangioma, capillary hemangioma, and cavernous hemangioma. Infantile hemangiomas are typically seen during the first year of life and usually resolve on their own by age five or six. Capillary hemangiomas are associated with conditions like Sturge-Weber syndrome and proliferate vastly in size and may occur anywhere on the body. The cavernous hemangioma is a deep-cup structure which occurs usually under the heavier skin and hair-bearing skin.

The exact cause of a hemangioma is still not known, but it has been researched to have a correlation with the dropping of female hormone levels at birth. Some cases show closer relation to dietary factors. However, a really reason for this is still unknown. Milder cases are usually monitored, and in severe cases treatment, including surgical removal or laser therapy may be necessary to remove the excess blood vessels.
