helyfokozó

A helyfokozó (literally “place modifier”) is a type of adverbial modifier in Hungarian that specifies or modifies a location. It is equivalent to a locative adverbial phrase in English. Helyfokozók often answer the question “hol?” (where?) and can be expressed by an individual adverb, a prepositional phrase, or a noun phrase introduced by a possessive pronoun or a demonstrative. Typical examples are the words a, itt, ott, sehogy, közel, távol, felesége, hibhagyók. The word helyfokozó itself also functions as a noun and refers to the category of such modifiers.

These modifiers play an important grammatical role in Hungarian sentences. They are positioned flexibly, usually placed before the verb, but they can also appear after the subject or before the object.
