A heliosensor is a sensor designed to measure properties related to the Sun, particularly solar radiation, the Sun’s apparent position, or both. In practice, heliosensors are used in fields such as solar energy, meteorology, climate research, and space science to quantify how much solar energy reaches a given surface and how the Sun moves across the sky.

Most heliosensors fall into categories that measure irradiance or solar geometry. Irradiance sensors include pyranometers, which record global horizontal irradiance, and pyrheliometers, which measure direct normal irradiance. Other devices detect specific spectral bands, such as ultraviolet radiometers or spectroradiometers, while photodiodes and bolometers can provide fast responses for dynamic solar signals. Some heliosensors are integrated with sun-tracking mechanisms to maintain directional alignment or to sample the Sun’s disk more precisely.

Applications of heliosensors are diverse. In solar energy, they enable resource assessment, performance monitoring, and forecasting for photovoltaic and thermal systems. In meteorology and climate science, they contribute to studies of the solar radiation budget and atmospheric processes. In space missions, heliosensors help characterize the solar flux environment that affects spacecraft operations and instrumentation. In astronomy, they assist in calibrating telescopes and understanding solar variability.

Calibration and maintenance are important, as sensor response can be affected by temperature, spectral sensitivity, and cosine response. Standards and regular intercomparisons help ensure consistency across instruments.
