Helikopterë, commonly known as helicopters, are a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontally spinning rotors. This allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, hover, and fly forward, backward, and laterally. The word "helicopter" is derived from the French word "hélicoptère," which itself is a portmanteau of the Greek words "helix" (spiral) and "pteron" (wing).

The fundamental principle of helicopter flight involves the rotation of the main rotor. The blades of the main rotor are airfoils, and as they spin, they generate lift. By changing the pitch of the blades, the pilot can control the direction and magnitude of the lift, enabling vertical ascent and descent, as well as forward, backward, and sideways movement. Most helicopters also have a tail rotor, which counteracts the torque produced by the main rotor, preventing the fuselage from spinning in the opposite direction.

Helicopters have a wide range of applications due to their unique flight capabilities. They are extensively used in military operations for transport, attack, reconnaissance, and search and rescue. In civilian sectors, helicopters are vital for emergency medical services, law enforcement, firefighting, news gathering, aerial photography, and offshore transport.
