Hellenística refers to the period of ancient Greek history and culture that followed the Classical period, beginning with the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE and lasting until the Roman conquest of the eastern Mediterranean, traditionally marked by the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. This era witnessed the widespread dissemination of Greek language, art, architecture, and political ideas throughout a vast empire stretching from Greece and Egypt to parts of India.

Following Alexander's conquests, his empire fractured into several successor kingdoms, ruled by his generals, known as the Diadochi. Prominent among these were the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, the Seleucid Empire in Asia, and the Antigonid dynasty in Macedon. These kingdoms, while often in conflict, became centers of Hellenistic culture and learning. Cities like Alexandria in Egypt, Antioch in Syria, and Pergamon in Asia Minor rose to prominence as major urban centers, boasting impressive libraries, universities, and artistic achievements.

Hellenistic philosophy saw the development and popularization of schools such as Stoicism, Epicureanism, and Skepticism, which offered ethical guidance and ways of life in a changing world. In art, the Hellenistic style moved away from the idealized serenity of the Classical period towards greater emotionalism, realism, and dynamism, exemplified by works like the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Pergamon Altar. The spread of Greek culture also led to syncretism, where Greek traditions blended with local customs and religions, creating new cultural forms across the Mediterranean and Near East. The Roman Republic's expansion eventually absorbed the Hellenistic kingdoms, but the cultural legacy of the Hellenistic age profoundly influenced Roman civilization and, through it, much of Western culture.
