heksokinase
Hexokinase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism. It catalyzes the first step of glycolysis, the breakdown of glucose to produce energy. Specifically, hexokinase phosphorylates glucose, transferring a phosphate group from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to glucose, forming glucose-6-phosphate. This phosphorylation makes glucose impermeable to the cell membrane, trapping it inside the cell for further metabolism and prevents glucose from diffusing back out.
There are four main isozymes of hexokinase in mammals, denoted as hexokinase I, II, III, and IV.
The activity of hexokinase is regulated by its product, glucose-6-phosphate, which acts as an allosteric inhibitor.
