heittosektori

Heittosektori, or the throwing sector, is the field area in track and field used for throwing events where a valid landing must occur. It is a wedge-shaped region defined by boundary lines, within which the thrown implement must land to be considered legal.

The sector is formed by two straight lines that emanate from the center of the throwing circle, creating an angle of 34.92 degrees (approximately 35 degrees). The lines extend outward across the landing area to the field boundary. This sector applies to the main throwing events: shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin. A throw is valid only if the implement lands entirely within the sector and within the designated landing area; landing outside the sector or touching a boundary line results in a foul.

Measurement of a valid throw is typically from the inside edge of the throwing circle to the point where the implement first contacts the ground within the sector. The sector lines and landing area are usually marked on the ground and are protected by safety measures such as nets or cages to protect officials and spectators.

Standards for the heittosektori are set by World Athletics (the international governing body for the sport) and applied by national federations. While the fundamental concept is consistent internationally, some youth or club competitions may adapt markings or safety arrangements, provided they maintain the core principle that throws must land within the defined sector to be valid.
