Hegységépítés, also known as orogeny or mountain building, is the geological process by which large mountain ranges are formed. This process is primarily driven by the movement and collision of Earth's tectonic plates. When these plates converge, immense compressional forces are generated, causing the Earth's crust to buckle, fold, and fault.

There are several types of plate boundaries involved in mountain building. Convergent boundaries where oceanic crust meets continental crust often lead to the formation of volcanic mountain ranges, as the denser oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate, melting and rising as magma. The Andes Mountains are a prime example of this. At continental-continental convergent boundaries, where two continents collide, the crust is intensely deformed, resulting in massive, non-volcanic mountain ranges with folded and faulted strata. The Himalayas, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, exemplify this type of orogeny.

The timescale of mountain building is typically measured in millions of years. The process involves gradual deformation, uplift, and erosion. Over geological time, the forces of weathering and erosion will begin to wear down the mountains, shaping their landscapes into the forms we see today. The specific geological structures and rock types found in a mountain range provide clues to the processes that formed it. Studying these features helps geologists understand the Earth's dynamic history and the forces that continue to shape our planet.
