HCE, or Host Card Emulation, is a technology that enables a mobile device to emulate a contactless smart card using near-field communication (NFC). This allows a phone or wearable to interact with a card reader as if it were a physical card, enabling transactions and access control without a dedicated plastic card.

Functionally, HCE stores the card’s credentials and cryptographic keys either in a secure element (a protected hardware component) or in a trusted execution environment on the device. When a reader initiates a transaction, the device responds as the card, using tokenization and other security measures to protect sensitive data. Credentials can be provisioned locally on the device or via cloud-based services, depending on the platform and provider.

Applications of HCE are broad but are best known for mobile payments. Wallets and financial services use HCE to issue payment tokens that can be transmitted to readers at checkout. HCE is also used for transit passes, access control in workplaces, and certain loyalty programs, offering a convenient, cardless user experience.

Security considerations are central to HCE deployments. The robustness of the security model depends on whether credentials are stored in a secure element or in a software-based environment, user authentication requirements, and the use of encryption and tokenization. While software-based approaches improve flexibility, they may introduce additional risk if device security is compromised.
