Havsisbildning refers to the process by which seawater freezes to form sea ice. This phenomenon is crucial in polar regions, particularly the Arctic and Antarctic. When the ocean surface temperature drops below the freezing point of seawater, which is approximately -1.8 degrees Celsius (28.8 degrees Fahrenheit) due to salt content, ice crystals begin to form. These crystals aggregate and thicken, eventually creating a continuous layer of sea ice.

The process is influenced by several factors, including water temperature, salinity, and wind conditions. Brine, a highly saline liquid, is often expelled from the forming ice crystals, a process known as "brine rejection." This increases the salinity of the surrounding unfrozen water, which in turn can lower its freezing point further. Over time, layers of ice can build up, forming different types of sea ice such as first-year ice (ice that forms and melts within a single year) and multi-year ice (ice that survives at least one melt season).
