They utilize X-rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation, to create a grayscale image based on the varying densities of different tissues and structures. Bones, due to their high calcium content, appear white, while air-filled structures like the intestines appear black. Softer tissues have intermediate shades of gray.

These X-rays are typically performed to investigate a range of gastrointestinal symptoms and conditions. Common indications include severe abdominal pain, suspected bowel obstruction, perforation of an organ, or the presence of foreign bodies. They can help visualize the size and shape of organs such as the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, and spleen, although their detail for soft tissues is limited compared to other imaging modalities like CT scans or ultrasounds.

In a standard abdominal X-ray, the patient usually lies on their back (supine view) and may also be positioned on their side (lateral view) or standing (upright view) to assess for air-fluid levels, which are indicative of obstruction. The procedure is quick and non-invasive, with minimal radiation exposure.
